50 Stationery Starter Packs on their way to school. On behalf of the cool boys and girls that will be lugging these around for their first year at college or intermediate in Wellington, thank you to everyone that donated to the Stationery Starter Packs fund last year.
We raised enough money to donate more than 50 packs to kids leaving low decile Primary Schools in Wellington, to start at Intermediate or College. We focused on the kids & families that the schools knew were going to be struggling to afford their stationery, and made sure these kids kick off their first year at ‘big kid school’, with the basics they need to get ahead.
A lot of you were in the team at the time but for those that weren’t – the Stationery Starter Packs project came about when I met a little girl at one of the schools we were working with in Shoebox Christmas. She wanted school stationery for Christmas because she knew her parents couldn’t afford it. I wrote about it here.
You guys knew that wasn’t right and together as a team you contributed in a bunch of different ways to help. It started some pretty cool conversations, and some pretty disappointing ones too, as a few un-informed bystanders chipped in with the tried and un-true comments like “great, now the parents will have more money for cigarettes and alcohol”. Never mind them, not everyone needs a response.
Next year I think there’s an opportunity to do something even cooler with these packs to help these kids and families make the opportunity of education work for them as best it can. But I need to spend some more time thinking that through with the people that actually know about this stuff (eg. the schools). There’s some really smart, really passionate people out there doing everything they can for these kids and their education once they walk into the school gates, but let’s not leave it entirely up to them.
I’ll give you an update once I’ve got one to give 🙂
